What is a Babymoon Doula?

A Babymoon Doula is a specialty trained caregiver who provides physical, emotional, environmental and spiritual support to an expecting family. Our doulas serve each client personally by respecting and honoring their philosophies on pregnancy, birth and parenting. Our team supports your choice and allows you to explore the variety of options available to you for labor and birth. Our doulas respect each family's cultural beliefs and practices and helps incorporate these into your birth and postpartum care plans. Can I use a Doula if we are planning a Cesarean Section?

A doula brings physical, emotional and spiritual support before, during and after a cesarean delivery by using the same skills as a traditional birth. She can help communicate with your healthcare provider and can assist you in the preparation for planned surgery and post operative care. During the pre-operative period, your doula can help support both the mother and father by assisting with procedures like the administration of an IV, and the placement of the catheter and epidural for surgery. Your doula will help relieve any fears and anxieties byfacilitating communication between you and the hospital staff. She is able to provide gentle reminders and support for both you and your family members.

Once inside the operating room, your doula will assist you in knowing what is going on by giving you details of whatever you wish to know. Your surgeon and assistants are busy doing the surgery. She can remind the staff of any special requests you may have specific to your birth plan and can take photos and video of the miraculous event. During the postpartum period your doula can assist with breastfeeding and post-operative comfort measures. She can make phone calls to family, run to the cafeteria to grab a meal for dad or assist with newborncare.

When I became pregnant with my first of three children I immediately began exploring my birth options. I was a newly practicing chiropractor and was also personally becoming immersed in living a healthy and natural lifestyle. Finding birth options that Imost felt comfortable became my top priority. Yoga during your pregnancy has the opportunity to fuel your energy while greatly reducing your tension and stress. Think about it; your goes through major physical and emotional changes throughout your entire pregnancy. Your lower back, your pelvis, and your entire posture is supporting the natural changes of pregnancy and your growing baby. If you do nothing to help your body with the changes and the stress it is adapting to then you may experience challenges. Tips And Tricks Class

Here is Jessica's next Blog in our Babymoon Class Experience Series. She took our Tips and Tricks Class which is part of our Holistic Childbirth Series. The next Tips and Tricks Class is Sunday October 23 at 1pm. If you need to take this class before then, please call us at Babymoon and we would be happy to arrange an earlier class for you with Jamie, our instructor.

Over the weekend my husband and I took the prenatal class called “Tips and Tricks for an Easier Labor”. Being a second-time mom, I was not sure what the class would have to offer, but I really enjoyed learning relaxation techniques and helpful suggestions for calming and relaxing your body. The class was very hands-on and partners were encouraged to learn skills to help relieve discomfort. We had a lot of fun! Jamie provided lots of suggestions for calming your body and your mind by changing how you look at the process of labor.

Jamie provided a variety of tools and techniques to try and many were very inexpensive. My favorite tool was the dryer ball. This little ball felt really good on my back and relieved some pressure I was having. I will definitely be getting one of these for my labor bag! Jamie also demonstrated different positions and massaging tips to help relieve pressure, stress, and discomfort. If you sign up for this class, wear nice stretchy and comfortable clothes because you will be moving a lot.

All pregnant women should seriously consider this class. It doesn’t matter whether you are planning on an unmedicated birth or using pain relieving medications, the tips and tricks help you to understand the process of having a supported labor and birth experience. Since most hospitals will not provide an epidural until around 4 centimeters of dilation, the tips and tricks can be used by all laboring women in the early stages of labor. Jamie provides further guidance and ideas for clients who are planning an unmedicated birth experience. I am looking forward to using many of these suggestions during my labor and delivery.

My name is Jessica Kuhlengel and I am currently pregnant with my second child and due in September. As a pregnant mom, I want to make healthy choices for myself and my baby and was excited to find opportunities right here in the Resource Center and through Babymoon at Home. I will be blogging about each class and doula visit that I have to help you understand the process and how it is helping me reach my goal of a healthy pregnancy and positive birth and postpartum experience.

I absolutely love working at Babymoon! Babymoon is a mother-owned company and the employees are moms who understand and desire to meet the needs of real moms. When participating in Happiest Baby on the Block class was first suggested to me, I wondered what I could learn but decided that any tips and tricks that would make my life easier as a new mom would be valuable. After taking the class, I was excited to have new information and skills that I could use immediately after the birth and to make my life as a mother calmer and easier.

In the class, we learned about “The Fourth Trimester” and ways to soothe a fussy baby as well as promoting improved sleeping patterns for babies. My favorite tip was holding your baby in a side or stomach position for calming instead of towards the breast. I believe this will really help me and my family in calming my new baby. There is so much more to the class and I highly recommend to it all expecting and new parents!

Breastfeeding Awareness Week

In honor of Breastfeeding Awareness Week, Babymoon Boutique is celebrating the many breastfeeding moms we have had the opportunity to work with over the past years. At Babymoon Boutique, we strive to provide a nurturing environment where every mom who chooses to breastfeed receives the support she needs to meet her unique needs and goals. Over the last four years, we have felt fortunate to help many women overcome obstacles to develop positive nursing relationships with their babies in our store, our breastfeeding support group, and with our lactation consultants.

ANXIETY BUSTERS!!!

The media has promoted and discussed publicly the reality and concerns around postpartum depression. What you may not know is that approximately 6% of pregnant women and 10% of postpartum women experience anxiety. Anxiety may be experienced alone or in conjunction with depression. This blog post will discuss perinatal (the period from pregnancy through postpartum) anxiety. There are two other mood disorders that are closely connected to anxiety, Panic Attacks and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, which can also be experienced during the perinatal period. Future blogs will discuss these mood disorders.

Symptoms
Constant worry
A feeling that something bad is going to happen
Sleeping too little or too much
Eating too much or too little
A feeling that you can't slow down your thoughts or your thoughts bounce from one topic to another
A need to be constantly involved in activity; it's hard to sit still and have some down time
Physical symptoms may include hot flashes, nausea, and dizziness
Irritability

Risk Factors
The following factors indicate an increased risk of experiencing perinatal anxiety, however, it is impossible to predict exactly who will be affected. Some women with no risk factors experience their first anxiety attacks during the perinatal period.
A family or personal history of anxiety
A previous episode of anxiety
Hormonal imbalances (you may have had significant PMS prior to getting pregnant, or you required hormonal assistance to get pregnant and stay pregnant)
A thyroid condition

Thoughts
Women experiencing anxiety begin with a thought "The baby is crying and I have no idea what is wrong" and then add-on thoughts like "A good mother should be able to figure out what is wrong with her child. I can't figure out what's wrong with my child, therefore, I am not a good mom." This leads to feelings of inadequacy and lowered self-confidence and self-esteem.
A trained therapist or counselor can assist a woman with working through these thoughts and learning how to successfully manage and allay the catastrophizing that accompanies anxiety.

What to Do
Assess your situation: Are you getting adequate rest (not just sleep, but are you able to rest)? Are you eating a balanced diet? Are you getting any exercise? Do you take time to do something just for you every day (a hot shower, a meditation exercise, a manicure, reading from a good book, etc)?

Observe and record. Sometimes there are specific events or ideas that really set anxiety into overdrive. Learning to recognize these events or ideas allows you to avoid them or create a plan for managing your reactions to them. Keep a journal of what happened before, during and after your anxiety attacks. Look for a pattern of what may be contributing to your anxious feelings. Is it when the baby has been up most of the night? Is it when you have a fight with your spouse? Is it when you watch the evening news? Find the patterns and develop a plan to avoid or manage these situations.

Breathe! It sounds so cliché but it works so well. Most of the time we take shallow breaths and do not allow our body to really get the oxygen it needs to perform optimally. Taking a deep breath in through your abdomen, holding it to a count of 3, and releasing to a count of 3 can allow you time to slow down your pulse and your racing thoughts. Do this several times until you feel your tension melting away and then breathe a few more them just to release any residual tension.

If your new baby is contributing to your anxiety--it could sleep deprivation or a fussy baby that's contributing--plan to manage this. A partner can take the baby a couple of times a week and allow you 8 hours of sleep; this can make a big difference. If this is not an option, you might consider a postpartum doula for overnight assistance and care of the baby. It's amazing how 8 hours of sleep can change the way you feel! If the baby is extremely fussy, consider a newborn class or hands-on help in learning how to work with a fussy baby.

If your anxiety persists or worsens, call a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who is trained to assess mental health and to prescribe appropriate medications. There are many medications that work effectively to combat the effects of anxiety. Many of these medications are safe and compatible with breastfeeding. In addition to medication, your psychiatrist may recommend seeing a counselor who can provide help with processing your thoughts and responses and help you develop new coping skills.

What to Pack in a Diaper Bag

Leaving out of the house with a new baby can feel like you are toting the whole house along until you realize you've left some essential item at home. As a mom of five kids and one who likes to travel, these are just my thoughts on what needs to be in a diaper bag. New Prenatal Classes Coming To Babymoon

We are excited to announce that in July we are starting a new series of Prenatal Classes for Expectant Parents in St. Charles and the surrounding area. The first class is our Baby Bump Basics Class, this free class will be offered once a month on the third Saturday of the month at 12:30pm. This is class is for those parents who just found out they are pregnant and would like more information about what is ahead for them in the months to come.

The next six classes in the prenatal series can be taken in any order and are $35 for each two hour class. The classes can also be taken as a package that includes the six prenatal classes, Baby Basics, Breastfeeding 101, Infant/Child CPR, and Happiest Baby on the Block. The Prenatal Education Package costs $325 and includes all of the above classes for the Expectant Parents.

The first Class of the prenatal series is Pickles and Ice Cream: What is happening to Your Pregnant Body, this class covers what are normal adjustments for both mom and dad during the pregnancy. It also covers how you can promote a healthy pregnancy and postpartum period. This class is good for expectant parents in there first trimester or early in their second trimester.

The next four classes in the prenatal series are about planning for labor and delivery. These classes are good for expectant parents in their second and early third trimester. I Think It Is Time: The Stages of Labor, this class covers typical labor patterns, what to pack to take to the hospital and when to go to the hospital. The next class is Your Best Birth: Setting the Stage for a Satisfying Labor and Delivery, topics this class covers are selecting a care provider, writing a solid birth plan, unmedicated birth and pain relief through medication. The third class The Machine That Goes Bing: Common Interventions of Labor and Delivery, interventions from inception to cesarean and everything in between is covered in this class. Tips and Tricks for an Easier Labor Class goes over typical scenarios in a hospital labor and delivery.

The last class of our prenatal series is Nurturing the New Family this class is ideal to take during the last trimester. This class covers how to prepare your home and your relationship for the new baby. It also covers sibling preparation and adjustment.

Dawn joined the Babymoon team in January of 2011. She graduated from the University of Missouri St. Louis with a Bachelor of Arts of in English and is currently pursuing a Masters in Education-Counseling. She adores spending time with her energetic six year old son, Logan and her even more energetic one year old dog Penny. She enjoys playing piano, singing, songwriting and reading, and is excited to be part of the Babymoon family.

Dawn will be teaching all of our Babymoon Makes Music Classes, Pint Size Picasso Classes and doing Story Time and Play Date.

At 11:30 Dr. David Hadden from O’Fallon Crossing Chiropractic will be discussing back pain and other conditions affecting pregnant woman and new mothers. This informative session will teach participants the common cause of back and hip pain and specific exercises to help prevent discomfort during and after pregnancy.

Dr. Hadden has been a Chiropractor for over 6 years. In that time, he as become very experienced treating pregnant women and new mother’s who are having low back pain, hip pain, sciatic nerve pain and many other conditions. Dr. Hadden understands the chances a woman’s body goes through during pregnancy. His safe and effective techniques target the area causing the pain are focused on first relieving the pain and then teaching women to prevent further pain. Dr. Hadden and his wife are currently expecting their second child & have been successful in maintaining a pain free pregnancy in both the past and present.

Jaime Bodily will be teaching a Free Happiest Baby on the Block class at 1pm. Happiest Baby on the Block was developed by Dr. Harvey Karp. Mommy Fit Yoga Class

Mommy Fit Yoga is a Hatha and Vinyasa style combination class to help you stay fit, energized and relaxed. This 50 minute class is designed to burn calories, strengthen and lengthen muscles while giving you time to yourself. We will sometimes move from pose to pose with our breath and sometimes hold the poses for a couple of breaths. We will also incorporate some inversions and balancing poses to challenge our body and mind. Take 50 minutes for yourself to balance your mind, body and spirit.

Babies Make Music: At this level, parents & babies interact through rhythmic exercises using real age appropriate instruments, while developing stronger timing, balance, and language skills. Emphasis is also placed on singing lullabies, and playing lap games. This is a fantastic way to bond with your little one and help them build important motors skills at an early age. Your baby will instinctively react to the music and parents will learn how to incorporate the musical exercises into the home environment.

Toddlers Make Music: The toddler music class involves dynamic instruments, a multitude of dancing and singing exercises, as well as puppet play and story time. Concentrating on You and Your Family this New Year

The YMCA has come up with fun, helpful, and easy ideas to jump start your new year with your family. Babymoon would like to pass this information along to inspire those looking for ways to enhance their family's connectivity and growth.

Plan a family outing like a short road trip or apple or strawberry picking. Even little outings are great memory-making opportunities.
Work on a family project together; engage the kids and your spouse in home improvement efforts or baking projects.
One day or more a week, eat dinner together as a family with the TV turned off and talking to each other as a family.
Get to know your kids; encourage your kids to get to know you. Ask each other a question and give an honest answer (i.e. Who is your best friend? What did you eat for lunch today?). Be creative—this should be fun!
Every season change, plan a family weekend to package outgrown clothes, toys and little-used household goods to deliver to a local charity collection site.
Make a regular date night with your spouse. Even if it’s just a couple of hours every other Tuesday, set aside connect time.

Reconnect with You....

Keep a daily journal, attend a weekly worship service or take a yoga class or go on a walk after dinner.
Commit to regular meditation/quiet time (no TV, computer, or cell phones).
Be kind and friendly to others. Kids can reach out to a shy or new classmate; the family can help an elderly neighbor with chores.
If there are times when you feel sad, reach out to someone to talk about it. Encourage children to do the same.

Wow, it’s already time to start thinking about holiday gifts! Every year we get many questions from extraordinary parents like you about what kinds of toys or activities to buy for your children. When choosing items to bring into your home (whether as a holiday gift, or any other time of year) there are a few key questions we encourage you to consider:
How will my child use this item?
Something to keep in mind is that at this stage in their development (from birth through 5 years), fantasy play disconnects children from reality and is much different than creativity. We want to foster our children’s creativity by providing them with toys that are “open-ended” or provide many possibilities for their use (i.e. wooden blocks, art materials, etc.). Other kinds of toys can help children focus their attention and strive for a goal (i.e. puzzles, games, etc.).
Is the item real, beautiful and attractive?
Children need purposeful “work” to do at home in order to feel respected and part of the family. Smaller versions of household tools (i.e. child-sized broom, mop, dust pan, iron, etc.) offer the children an opportunity to participate in the daily routines of the home.
Will this item support my child’s developmental needs (i.e. independence, creativity, freedom, exploration, order, etc.)?
We now live in a society that holds the false belief that children must be constantly entertained (by adults, the television, toys that light up and make noise, etc.) Unfortunately, it is this constant “entertainment” that is now one of the main obstacles to our children’s development. Many children have lost their love of order, beauty, simplicity and quiet due to adults and “stuff” getting in their way.
What behaviors will this elicit from my child and what values am I conveying?
Pay attention to the “feelings” and behaviors you observe in your child when they are involved in different activities. There may be some toys or games that encourage competitiveness rather than cooperation, roughness rather than gentleness, or intolerance over compassion and forgiveness. Although superheroes and princesses are the “norm” for children today, are those really the values and behaviors you want to see your children adopt?
As always, remember the ever-so-important concepts of limiting choices (we recommend 10 or so toys out at a time), rotating toys and supporting them in keeping their space neat, clean and orderly. A few beautiful toys displayed nicely on a small shelf are much more attractive and inviting to children than a huge chest overflowing with plastic!
One family at our school also let us in on the most wonderful tip about giving gift guidelines to your friends and family who will be buying for your child: Nothing made of plastic and nothing with a battery! Thanks for the GREAT tip! That philosophy alone would help Santa fill your children’s holidays with treasures instead of trash.

Thanksgiving Craft for the Whole Family

Thanksgiving has long been a favorite holiday of mine. Not only does it mark the start of the larger holiday season, but it celebrates the spirit of gratitude, something that as parents we all try to instill in our children. Cultivating gratitude can be challenging for small children, who are still developmentally learning to look outside their own wants and needs to those of others. One way to teach this important value is to ask your children to share the things they are thankful for on a regular basis, not just on Thanksgiving day.

This fall, we created a “Gratitude Tree” to encourage this daily conversation at our dinner table. We cut a tree trunk out of a roll of brown packing paper and traced and cut out fall leaves on yellow, orange and red tissue paper. Each night at dinner throughout the month of November, our family goes around the table and shares the one thing they were most thankful for that day. We write each person’s response on a leaf and tape it to the branches of the tree. By Thanksgiving Day, we’ll have a whole month of gratitude to share. It has been a great conversation starter at dinnertime, and the kids’ answers range from amusing (“I’m thankful for gum”) to sincere (“I’m thankful for a visit with my Grandma”).

Babymoon Moms know that organization is key to staying ahead of your event calendar. We are happy to share some insight on Mommy time management and have selected a few items to compliment your current lifestyle.

Get Organized with a Family Planner: The Mom Agenda

10 Tips for Successful Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has countless benefits for both mom and baby, but breastfeeding isn't always easy. Successful breastfeeding takes practice, patience and dedication. Be sure to surround yourself with resources and positive support systems. If breastfeeding is tougher than you expected, try not to get discouraged and don’t give up right away. The majority of mothers who have chosen to nurse, have reported that they were really not able to appreciate the art of breastfeeding until around the 3rd or 4th month of nursing on an exclusive basis. It's OK to have a slow start. As you and your baby get to know each other, breastfeeding will begin to feel more natural.
Here are some helpful tips to keep you focused, motivated and dedicated.
1. Do your homework. Obtain as much information about nursing before delivery. Be sure to read books and articles, speak with your physician, and take an interactive breastfeeding class that will get both you and your partner involved from the beginning.

2. Ask for help. Early support is often the key to successful breastfeeding. As soon as possible after the delivery, ask for help from the nursing staff or lactation consultant to get off to a good start. Make sure you have assistance in positioning and latch technique. The sooner you are able to master these skills, the further along you will be once you return home. Once you are both home, seek out a breastfeeding support group that you can attend weekly for peer support.

3. Use nursing time to relax and bond with baby. Correct positioning for mom is just as important as proper positioning for baby. Sit in a comfortable chair that supports your back and the arm that cradles baby. Pull baby close to your breast and be sure not to bring your breast to baby. Using a nursing pillow or support pillow can assist with easy positioning. Lying on your side next to baby is another comfortable position. Be sure to keep a pillow between your legs to allow for proper alignment of your back and spine.

4. Feed baby on demand. For the first few weeks, most newborns breastfeed every two to three hours and feeding times can range from 5 to 40 minutes depending on babies size and growth pattern. After a few weeks, frequent feedings and sleep interruption can have a strain on everyone in the family. Benefits of frequent feedings include helping to stimulate your breasts to produce milk, resulting in a content baby that is well nourished. Watch for early signs of hunger, such as stirring, rooting and stretching, sucking motions and lip movements. Fussing and crying are later cues.

5. Keep baby awake and stimulated during feedings. Babies often tend to be sleepy and will fall asleep at breast after just a few minutes of nursing. Be sure to watch baby’s cues and feeding patterns and keep baby alert when it is time to nurse. If your baby takes short pauses during breastfeeding sessions to gaze at you or look around the room, enjoy this time to bond with baby.

6. Fine tune your technique. Let your baby nurse from the first breast thoroughly, until the breast feels soft — often about 15 minutes. Then try burping the baby. After that, offer the second breast. If your baby's still hungry, he or she will latch on. If not, simply start the next breast-feeding session with the second breast. If your baby consistently nurses on only one breast at a feeding during the first few weeks, pump the other breast to relieve pressure and protect your milk supply.

7. Be aware of baby’s intake and output. Babies are getting enough breastmilk when they produce six to eight wet diapers per day and are passing several yellow, seedy and loose stools. If you have any concerns if baby is getting enough each feeding, weigh baby before you begin your feeding, allow baby to complete a full feeding cycle, and then weigh your baby again. The difference in weight is approximately the amount of breastmilk baby has consumed for that feeding.

8. Know your body’s signals. When your baby is latched on successfully, you'll feel a gentle tugging sensation on your breast. Breastfeeding should not be painful, but may be uncomfortable at first until your nipples become less sensitive. Breasts may feel firm or full before the feeding, and softer or emptier afterward, however, some mothers do not report a change in breast firmness. If your nipples become dry or cracked, try applying lanolin, olive oil or expressed breastmilk and allow them to airdry.

9. Think functional. Invest in nursing bras, tanks and tops that will allow for easy accessibility and privacy. Many breastfeeding moms wear loose tops that can be partially unbuttoned from the bottom up, for feedings. You can also use a nursing cover or blanket if you would like privacy. Some baby carriers offer extra fabric for discretion while nursing.

10. Continue those healthy habits. Your lifestyle choices are just as important when you're breastfeeding as they were when you were pregnant.
Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Drink lots of fluids.
Rest as much as possible.
Only take medication with your doctor's OK.
Don't smoke & limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol.

Fatherhood has evolved significantly since the old school days of Dads heading off to work while Moms stayed home to cook, clean and care for the children in the family. Today’s fathers are more involved in everyday care giving activities, as well as household duties and responsibilities. In today’s economy, it often takes two incomes to support a household and parents look to one another for guidance, advice and support. At Babymoon, we are witnessing our network of fathers grow and we are happy to share suggestions for our new Dads and our “Dads-to-Be.”

1. Open the Lines of Communication. Communicating effectively with your partner will minimize any uncertainties in plan of action or expectation. When communication is clear and concise, it is easier to meet expectations and provide appropriate feedback for problem solving and resolution. This is a skill that will be fine-tuned naturally with practice and patience. Determine what style of communication works best and commit to using any modality that will enhance the power of comprehension. Often just leaving written notes or designating a time each evening to recap the day and plan for tomorrow will keep both you and your partner connected mentally and spiritually.

2. Be Attentive to the Needs of Your Partner and Family. Being available and attentive to the needs of your partner will help with the transition of having a newborn at home. Planning and preparation can often help during the adjustment period of sleepless nights and nervous apprehensions; however, it is impossible to plan of every event and forecast every possible solution. Understanding and patience have a remarkable way of easing tensions and anxieties experienced by new parents. A supportive partnership is the key to sustaining a successful Babymoon.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask & Get Involved. Reach out to other Fathers in your life who has experienced the evolution of family. In life, we learn through our experiences. Listen to the advice of others, read about parenting, consult the experts, but consider yourself to be the authority on your family and infant. Bring the information you have discovered to your partner for honest discussion and consideration. Plan a “Guys Night Out” to connect to those who may be helpful in offering suggestions and recommendations. Hands on participation is the best way to overcome fears and anxieties. Don’t be afraid to follow your own instincts and intuitions.

4. Set Realistic Expectations. Go easy on yourself and allow a margin for error. Parenting can be extremely challenging, but fortunately it is also very forgiving. Try not to schedule too many things in one day and try to adjust to the idea that everything takes longer with a baby. Previous schedules and regimented plans often need to be adjusted after the birth of a new baby. Incorporate family time in between work and social commitments. Keep in mind, it is impossible be everything to everyone all of the time.

5. Take Care of Yourself & Don’t Lose Sight of You. When life becomes overwhelming, take rest periods and allow yourself the opportunity to take a break from the action. Take care of your personal needs through diet, exercise and good sleep habits. Connect to social outlets and spend time alone with your partner when the opportunity arises. Establish personal goals and celebrate your achievements. The best gift you can give your family is the love and support from a healthy and happy father.

I've never really been much of a blogger, but ever since I got the opportunity to intern for Babymoon Boutique, I saw how much connectivity, information, and excitement goes into the world of blogging. I decided now was the time to write my very first blog with the company that I have been so grateful to work for.

Coming from a background of working in women and men's apparel and going to school for fashion, I did not know what to expect working for a "baby" store. I was curious and somewhat nervous I would not fit in. What did I know about babies? Babies were an unfamiliar topic to me. Sure, I babysat a little in high school, but never cared for any kid younger than four. As soon as my internship began, I knew I had to switch my mindset from fashion to babies. To my surprise, I discovered there is LOTS of fashion in baby world; the different kinds of paisley and floral patterns in the hotsling baby carriers or the softest bamboo onesee you'll ever feel. The diaper bags, the cloth diapers, and even the diaper holders are fashionable with cute names like Diapees and Wipees! I was even surprised to see items I never knew existed like Babylegs which are like leg warmers for babies and toddlers. The mom and baby matching novelty shirt sets are another one of my favorites. Interning at Babymoon Boutique has shown me a whole new meaning of the word "fashion." I cannot wait to share my new found fashions with classmates back at school. While they are all talking about the same old boring capris and henley pullovers, I will bring a new light to the class with my knowledge of nursing covers for chic mothers and the most adorable, delicate, white princess dresses!

An intimate setting in a relaxed atmosphere gives you the opportunity to do just that. Thumb Bunny Card

This is a family favorite of ours for Valentine's Day Cards. Make your special card for family and friends!

CRAFT MATERIALS:
Paintbrush
White acrylic paint
Paper plate
Colored card stock
Black and pink markers
Time needed: Under 1 Hour

1. Use the paintbrush to spread a thin layer of paint on the bottom of the paper plate -- this will be your ink pad.

2. Have your kids dip their thumbs into the paint and print them on the card. Their thumbprint will be the bunny's head. For the ears, have them press down only half of their thumb to make a long, skinny shape.

3. After the paint dries, they can decorate the face with markers, adding whiskers, eyes, and a nose.

4. Use a black marker to write "Some bunny loves you!" on the front of the card.

Tips: Even a really young child can make the thumbprints. A parent or an older child can offer to help out with the features and writing.

We will be doing this activity this Friday at our Play Date from 11:00-11:45. Activity Fee is $5.00.

JUST IN TIME HOLIDAY RECEIPE

These mint chocolate cookies are a crowd pleaser at my house, hope you enjoy as much as we do!

JANINE'S FAMOUS CHOCOLATE MINT COOKIES
(well they are not really "Janine's" but she always makes them!)

¾ cup butter
11/2 cup brown sugar
2 T water
12 oz. package of choc. Chips
2 eggs
21/2 cups flour
11/4 t baking soda
½ t salt
Andes mints (broken in half)

Melt butter, sugar and water together. Add choc chips and melt. Cool slightly. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add flour, baking soda and salt. Chill for one hour.

Roll into balls. Bake at 350 degrees for 9-11 minutes. Immediately place a mint on top to melt. Swirl with knife.

HOLIDAY CRAFT TIME FOR KIDS!

These fun holiday cards are an easy and fun craft for you and the kids!

THUMBPRINT REINDEER:

You will need:
Ink pad with nontoxic brown or bronze ink
Plain notecards or card stock
Craft glue
Googly eyes
Mini pom-poms, brown and red
Brown marker
Use a thumb or fingertip to stamp 3 reindeer heads on each notecard. Glue on googly eyes and pom-pom noses (including a red one for Rudolph, of course). Finish by drawing antlers.

SNOWMAN JOYFUL TIDINGS:

CRAFT MATERIALS:
Plain notecards or card stock
Colored markers
Metal-rim key tag
Scissors
Black scrap paper
Glue dots
Star sticker
Candy cane stickers
Time needed: About 1 Hour

1. For each card, first create a mini ornament that will also serve as the letter "o." Use markers to draw a snowman's face on a key tag. Then cut out a black paper top hat and stick it in place with a glue dot. Drape the key tag string over the top of the notecard and secure it to the back with a star sticker.

2. Now finish spelling the word joy by adding candy cane stickers: one turned upside down to serve as a "j" and the other cut in two and reassembled to create a "y," as shown.

FESTIVE TREE

CRAFT MATERIALS:
Wavy-edged craft scissors and regular scissors
Scrapbook or origami paper in shades of green and brown
Glue stick
Plain notecards or card stock
Star sticker
Time needed: Under 1 Hour
1. Use the craft scissors to cut a number of 1/2-inch-wide strips from the green paper. Then use regular scissors to cut a small tree trunk for each card. 2. To assemble each tree, first glue the trunk onto a card. Working from the bottom up, trim and glue on the green strips, cutting each as you go so it's shorter than the previous one. Trim the last strip to form a triangular tip. Top the tree with a sticker star.

Preventing Seasonal Illness

As we step into Fall and Winter slowly approaches, we find our families at risk for catching the common cold or flu. Staying indoors and keeping close quarters with friends and family contribute to our risk of catching a cold or seasonal “bug.” Moms can take matters into their own hands by following some basic steps to prevention, helping to keep a healthy home and a happy family.

Wash your hands. Handwashing is the number one method of preventing illness. Clean your hands frequently and teach your children the importance of proper handwashing. Simply washing with warm water and ordinary soap for 10 seconds is one of the simplest and most effective ways to avoid catching a cold or the flu. Use antibacterial alcohol-based foams and gels when you don't have access to soap and water.

Disinfect your home regularly. Spray the surfaces of your home with a mild antibacterial cleaner or a mild solution of 2 to 5 percent bleach in water to kill viruses and bacteria. Keep kitchen and bathroom countertops clean, especially when someone in your family has a common cold. Limit passing toys back and forth and be sure to wash children's toys after play.

Always sneeze and cough into tissues. Discard used tissues right away, and then wash your hands carefully. Teach children to sneeze or cough into the bend of their elbow when they don't have a tissue. That way they cover their mouth without using their hands.

Sharing is Off-Limits. Don't share drinking glasses, utensils or snacks with other family members. Use your own glass or disposable cups when you or someone else is sick and be sure to label the cup or glass with the name of the person with the cold. Teach children to ask before helping themselves to a glass that is within their reach to make sure it is safe for drinking.

Eat a well-balanced diet. Vitamins and minerals obtain from fresh foods are essential to building a healthy immune system, and it provides sources of energy and nutrition for optimal growth and development. As the holidays approach, busy lives can often take time away from healthy meal planning. Plan meals in advance and try to encourage healthy snacks in between meals. Multivitamins can also help ensure that your family will receive an adequate dose of minerals and vitamins.

Get plenty of rest. On average, humans require seven to eight hours of sleep every night and children usually require 4-6 hours more depending on their age and sleep cycle. Lack of sleep can lower the immune system's ability to react when needed. Without sufficient sleep, it is difficult for your immune system to keep up with its nightly repair work, and creates an opening for opportunistic diseases and common cold and flu illness.
